A HOLLYWOOD star is still being given homework by his former teacher at Westlake Boys High School.
.
Martin Henderson, who had his acting debut on Shortland St back in 1992, visited his old school while promoting the film Home by Christmas in New Zealand.
.
While on a tour of the school grounds his old rugby coach and maths teacher Tony Vinicomber gave him a school homework book that featured him in a civil defence advertisement when he was 17 years old.
.
Mr Vinicomber says he knew Mr Henderson was coming and found the book buried at the back of his desk.
.
“Martin was a very good rugby player. He played in the 4A rugby team as a flanker and his team won the championship in 1990 and 1991,” he says.
.
The Kiwi actor grew up on the Shore and also attended Birkenhead Primary School. The Los Angeles resident visits the Shore every couple of years to see family.
.
Students were too young to remember when he played Stuart Neilson on Shortland Street but recognised him from films like Smokin’ Aces and Tourque.
.
Female teachers also enjoyed a glance at the star with one staff member describing him as a “cross between Brad Pitt and Russell Crowe”.
.
Mr Henderson, who attended the school from 1988 to 1992, told the North Shore Times he found it “really strange” coming back.
.
“It was weird driving back up the hill this morning that I remembered walking up on the way to school.”
.
He also remembered walking down the hill to catch a glimpse of the girls going to the neighbouring school Westlake Girls High School.
.
‘‘My father always saw the need for a good education and this school gave me that,’’ Mr Henderson says.
.
Drama students had the chance to meet Mr Henderson in class with a question and answer session.
.
‘‘There is a lot of focus on sports and academics, which is a good thing but I want them to know if you love something you can make a life out of that,’’ he says.
.
Most of all Mr Henderson hopes to inspire students just like he was when famous people would talk to him as a teenager.
.
Mr Henderson plays young Ed Preston in the New Zealand-made film Home by Christmas, directed by Gaylene Preston. It centres on the story of a man and his family’s experience of World War Two.

The film is now playing in cinemas around the country.

This morning’s Mother Son Breakfast was one to remember! Our special guest, Martin Henderson, encouraged our boys to appreciate their mums and everything they do.
Martin’s mum sat in the audience among all of the other mums and everyone listened intently to her talented son’s story about perseverance, courage and necessary failures.
A massive thank you to Martin for taking time out of his busy schedule and to the Westlake Rowing Society for making sure the morning ran smoothly #swansup #mothersonbreakfast
