Playing the fool for a stage debut
    by BAZ BAMIGBOYE, Daily Mail
    .
Juliette Lewis was tucking into a grilled salad Nicoise while her leading man Martin Henderson was chowing down on a hamburger.
    .
Their director Lindsay Posner, currently rehearsing them eight hours a day for a new production of Sam Shepard’s incendiary drama Fool For Love, told me he can’t eat at all before a big runthrough of a play.
    .
Juliette ordered a second salad to go, but alas, not for Lindsay to have later. It’s for her.
    .
The actors are preparing to play two of the most damaged souls in modern American theatre – Eddie and May – who have been connected on and off for 15 years. They meet in a desert motel to try to resolve their complicated love.
    .
Eddie keeps leaving and then coming back to May, like a yo-yo, as he says in the play.
    .
The pair are exhausted because Lindsay has delved into the fine lines of Shepard’s work.
    .
“By the second day we were going into personal stories about previous sexual relations,” Martin told me, hastening to add that the stories hadn’t necessarily related to their own sexual escapades.
    .
“We wanted to see if we had anything parallel to situations in the play. And the stories certainly broke the ice,” he joked.
    .
Lindsay said he and his company have had to dig deep. “It’s about a dysfunctional trauma that exists in Greek tragedy rather than modern plays, so you dig, but carefully.”
    .
Martin came across the play a couple of years ago while studying in New York. He has been on stage before in his native New Zealand and in the U.S., but Fool For Love is Juliette’s stage debut.
    .
She was drawn to playing May because, as she put it, “she’s not like me, on the surface”.
    .
The actress, who starred in Cape Fear and Kalifornia, describes herself as an “emotionalist”.
    .
“I just made that up,” she laughed. “But I understand and work with emotions when I act and I understand May – although no yo-yo relationship for me goes on for 15 years! I usually nip it in the bud real fast if it’s causing me a problem.”
    .
She also feels she is the right age to finally do a play.
    .
“I’ve had a little experience of life now and I’m not chasing any Hollywood illusions. Also, I’m not married and I don’t have any children, so it’s the perfect time to do it.
    .
“The play spoke to me in a major way,” added Juliet, who when she’s not acting fronts the rock band Juliette And The Licks.
    .
“Shepard’s got this rock ‘n’ roll rhythm in his writing.”
    .
Then Martin grabbed her by the hand and they sauntered out of Chez Gerard’s in Chancery Lane, as if they were getting ready for a gig.
    .
Fool For Love begins previewing at the Apollo, Shaftesbury Avenue next week.
